Concerns about encapsulating.
Due to a recently issued report by the Center for Disease Control, a reasonable concern regarding preparing encapsulated placenta for people with GBS colonization has been raised. In the report, a case of late-onset GBS (Group B Strep) infection in an infant was attributed to colonization in the mother from consuming GBS-infected placenta capsules.
The placenta capsules in this case were prepared using the raw encapsulation method (as indicated by the preparation process detailed in the report), which did not kill the GBS bacteria. Because the raw encapsulation method does not use temperatures high enough to kill most bacteria, I do not recommend this process for any encapsulation, and I do not offer it.
The cooked method (Traditional Chinese Method) includes steaming the placenta over simmering water for a minimum of 30 minutes, and drying the placenta for a minimum of 8 hours. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, GBS bacteria (Streptococcus agalactiae) is sensitive to moist heat at 55 ºC for 30 minutes, and inactivated by moist heat (121° C for at least 15 min) and dry heat (160-170° C for at least 1 hour).
Please know that I take this very seriously, and I follow the steaming and drying instructions very carefully.
